PLAN Okanagan has a strong commitment to families. Over 30 years ago a group of parents got together, while their young children were involved in programs, at what has now become the Starbright Children’s Development Centre (formerly Central Okanagan Child Development Association)
These families knew that together they could advocate more effectively for their children; they could support one another, at times, the difficult journey but they were also there to celebrate the goodness in their life. Families would experience hardships in their child’s development or health; they would need a shoulder to lean on or sometimes that familiar face was just enough to encourage them. As parents of differently gifted children, we also knew what it’s like when our child had great success, even though many other families would miss this minute step forward, we were able to rejoice and celebrate in how grand it really was for our child. Families, in this group, knew what an accomplishment it was.
When PLAN Okanagan formed in 2002, many of these families who had been journeying together, building deep friendships, learning from each other, supporting each other, formed the backbone of PLAN Okanagan. Not only did they participate as board members, started Lifetime Member Networks for their children, participate in and/or host workshops, but they also chose to bring their Families to Families Network into PLAN Okanagan as an added resource to families.
All families are welcome to participate. It is a relaxed and informal gathering with a variety of topics discussed. The wealth of information and experiences in this group is hard to match. There are no fees, there is no obligation to become a member, there is only an openness to join other parents and family members and “just be”.
